Trophy care and field
dressing moose and whitetail deer that have been harvested during
hunts with Trophy Book Outfitters
in Alberta Canada
Once the moose is down the real work
begins. ATV's are used to haul the moose out of the bush. The guide
will field dress the moose and any help from the hunter is always
appreciated, as these are really big animals to move around.
The moose/whitetail will be caped by the guide if the hunter is planning
to have it mounted by a taxidermist. It is quite difficult to take
the large sized antlers of a moose home on the airline. Most hunters
leave their moose cape and antlers at a local taxidermist to have
them mounted/crated and shipped home accordingly. We will transport
these to a good taxidermist if the hunter chooses and can recommend
several that do good work. The hunter will be responsible for all
costs relating to taxidermy work. The average cost to mount a moose
head is about $1,000 to $1,400 CDN with about $400-$600 for crating
and shipping costs.
Most of the hunters do not take all of the meat home with them but
they can if they choose, however the cost usually is very steep. Hunters
usually take the best cuts home. We will take the moose to a meat
processing plant if the hunter chooses. Meat care is not included
in the cost of the hunt. The hunter will be responsible for all costs
relating to meat care. The meat processor will cut/wrap and quick
freeze the meat. Most hunters then purchase some coolers or similar
containers and take the meat home on the plane as extra baggage. We
have been advised that the maximum weight per container is 70lbs.
The hunters should make all the necessary inquires before shipping
meat regarding the costs and other limitations. Any meat the hunter
does not take home with them will be donated to needy families.
